Najoua Mlika-Cabanne Innovation Award 2015

Third Award

Philip van der Wees was announced as the third Najoua Mlika-Cabanne award winner by Dr Fergus MacBeth during the opening ceremony of Amsterdam 2015.  

Philip is currently Senior Researcher at Radbound University Medical Centre. He has been a member of the European Region of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (ER-WCPT) Professional Issues Working Group since its inception in 2000 where he has made a significant contribution and led on evidence based practice in Clinical Guidelines in Europe. As part of this role he organised two Clinical Guideline conferences in the Netherlands, which brought together the latest thinking on Guideline Development, Adaptation and Implementation.

In 2004, whilst working at Royal Dutch Society for Physical Therapy (KNGF), Philip began a PhD programme at Maastricht University with the subject “Development, Implementation and Evaluation of Clinical Guidelines in Physical Therapy”. He was awarded his Doctorate in 2009. Philip worked as Programme Manager and senior researcher for the research programme “Quality and Implementation in Physical Therapy” in a collaboration between KNGF, the Scientific Institute for the Quality of Healthcare (Radboud University, Nijmegen Medical Centre) and CAPHRI School for Public Health and Primary Care (Maastricht University).

Philip became a member of the Guidelines International Network (G-I-N) and was elected to the G-I-N Board in 2009 and became Chair in 2010. Philip worked tirelessly to set up a worldwide AHP and nursing sub-group, organising and chairing meetings during the G-I-N Annual Conference and maintaining links through telephone conferences in between times.
In 2011 he received a scholarship for the Dutch Harkness Fellowship (2011/12) of the Commonwealth Fund at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA.

Philip has been a driving force in the development of a European Physiotherapy Guideline for the management of Parkinson’s Disease, published in 2015. This involved collaborating with specialists in the field, from member organisations of ER-WCPT, to bring together expert opinion from Physiotherapists across Europe.

Philip was presented the ER-WCPT Recognition of Excellence Award at the Region’s General meeting in Malta in May 2012. He has worked tirelessly and with great success in developing evidence based practice and guidelines within his profession. His work has led to academic success and wide recognition.
