Background

The increasing amount of research (studies and reviews) produced each year makes it impossible for clinicians, commissioners and other users of health research to evaluate and keep up-to-date with the new evidence. Consequently clinical guidelines have a vital role in providing a reliable overview of the research and also to make evidence-based recommendations.

The National Collaborating Centre for Women’s and Children’s Health (NCC-WCH) produces clinical guidelines in the UK for NICE. These guidelines incorporate evidence-based medicine, cost-effectiveness analyses and clinical and lay consensus to reach recommendations on health and social care.

The objectives of this course are to allow its participants to learn to scope a clinical guideline and work with a multidisciplinary team, interpret a systematic review in light of clinical expertise and health economics and write implementable recommendations. The lessons will include presentations, group work and question and answer sessions.
