The session was arranged and chaired by Dr Sadasivan Sivalal on behalf of Guidelines International Network. Four speakers and approximately 50 participants discussed guideline methodology. Dr. Sivalal presented the background of the panel session and G-I-N activities in the Asia-Pacific region, noticing the increasing interest in collaboration between guideline producers.
G-I-N chair, Prof. Marjukka Mäkelä, described the network, its activities and the benefits that a membership in G-I-N provides and informed about the upcoming conferences in Vienna-Budapest 2006 and Toronto 2007.
From the Australian National Institute of Clinical Studies (NICS), executive officer Jan Davies gave the presentation. She stressed the problems of implementation: Insufficient focus on needs of end user, highlighting what is most important clinically in terms of opportunities for health improvement, clarity of recommendations & identifying sound evidence based indicators to measure performance.
Dr. Cindy Farquhar from the New Zealand Guidelines Group presented experiences of collaboration between the Australian and new Zealand guidelines programmes, and underlined that contacts through G-I-N had facilitated a fruitful collaboration.
Marjukka Mäkelä discussed the funding issues from the point of view of guideline programs, noting that the cost of producing a guideline varies notably and depends on many issues: whether guidelines are produced singly of within programs, with a narrow or wide scope, what kind of literature search and critical appraisal methods are used, whether guidelines are available in the public domain or commercially only, if expert contribution is fully paid for, and on the media for distribution and frequency of updating.
Dr. Sivalal focused on various areas in implementation: acceptance of CPG, varying perceptions on CPG, lack of incentives/motivation to use CPG and monitoring implementation of CPG. He identified some of the reasons for these problems and suggested possible solutions to overcome them.
