Webinar: An Introduction to the Guideline Development Checklist

The Guideline Development Checklist contains a comprehensive list of topics and items outlining the practical steps to consider for developing guidelines. The checklist is intended for use by guideline developers to plan and track the process of guideline development and to help ensure that no key steps are missed. The purpose of the checklist is not to replace guideline credibility assessment tools like AGREE and other tools that may be a result of standards put forth by the Guidelines International Network (GIN) or Institute of Medicine (IOM). Following steps outlined in the checklist will, however, ensure that key items are covered and increase the likelihood of the guideline achieving higher scores when evaluated with credibility assessment tools.  The webinar recording has been replaced with a link to the GIN-McMaster Guideline Development Checklist which provides an introduction to the basic concepts of the Guideline Development Checklist and provides information on available online and PDF versions of the checklist, training materials and other related resources.

Holger Schünemann, an internist and clinical epidemiologist, is chair of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada, widely regarded as the birthplace of Evidence-Based Medicine and Problem-Based Learning. Dr. Schünemann graduated from the Medical School of Hannover, Germany, and trained in epidemiology (Ph.D. in 2000), preventive medicine/public health and internal medicine at the Medical School of Hannover, Germany, and at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo. He has authored or co-authored nearly 400 peer-reviewed publications across the areas of his training and research interest with an h-index of 60. His scientific work now focuses on methodology for research synthesis, supporting various organizations in conducting systematic reviews, and developing guidelines. His research team has recently created a “go to” crowdsourcing portal for developers of health care recommendations ( His research focuses on evidence synthesis, presentation and development of health care recommendations spanning clinical medicine to public health. He is co-chair of the GRADE working group (, a member of the Cochrane Collaboration Steering Committee, the Guidelines International Network Board of Trustees, and the Advisory Committee on Health Research (ACHR) at the World Health Organization (WHO). At McMaster University, he is also co-director of the WHO collaborating center for evidence informed policy-making.  He has planned to ride the course of a Tour de France for a while, but fails to take the time off.

Learning Objectives:

The objectives of this webinar are for participants to:
1.  Understand the importance of using a comprehensive checklist in the development and implementation of rigorous and transparent clinical guidelines.
2.  Learn about the 18 topics and related items in the the Guideline Development Checklist.
3.  See examples of how the Guideline Development Checklist is being used by influential developers of evidence-based clinical guidance.
4.  Learn about the free, publicly accessible Guideline Development Checklist training resources and publications available to guideline developers.
