On July 15, 2015, the G-I-N North America Webinar Series joined the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's (AHRQ) free webinar on "Implementing Shared Decision Making In Varied Practice Settings." The webinar examined how a variety of health care organisations—from a busy primary care clinic in an urban hospital to a network of small clinics in rural communities—have implemented shared decision making in their respective settings.
Shared decision making occurs when a health care provider and a patient work together to make a health care decision that is best for the patient. A large body of research shows that implementation of shared decision making in clinical practice increases patient satisfaction with their care, enhances patient understanding of their treatment options, and increases their involvement in decisions about their care. There is also emerging evidence that supporting people to share in decision making can improve health outcomes and the extent to which patients adhere to their treatment. Yet shared decision making has not been widely adopted in clinical practice.
This Webinar addressed: (1) an array of different approaches to the implementation of shared decision making, each tailored to the unique needs of a specific institution, (2) challenges encountered throughout the implementation process and creative strategies for overcoming them, and (3) lessons learned along the way.
