Update from the Emergency Care Community

Emergency Care Community logoThe G-I-N Emergency Care Community was established in 2007 to support multi disciplinary collaboration across the field of international emergency care to improve the application of clinical guidelines. The G-I-N Emergency Care (EC) Community has developed a unique partnership between G-I-N, the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) of Australia and the international emergency care sector.

Objectives of the Emergency Care Community are to:

  • distill knowledge and recommendations from existing high quality clinical guidelines that can be contextualized in local settings
  • undertake specific small-scale projects that could relate to guideline appraisal, implementation, dissemination or usability
  • provide the membership with access to both clinical knowledge and expertise in guideline development and implementation
  • provide a ‘virtual’ space for the sharing of resources, tools  and knowledge that supports application of guidelines.

In 2009, a steering group was established to provide guidance and assist in prioritising of activities to be generated through the community.  A survey was undertaken in 2009 to identify both clinical and non clinical topics of interest. From this list the steering group have identified the applicability of guideline recommendations as area of focus. A framework has been developed and is currently being trialed by the group using recently developed evidence based recommendations developed entitled ´Health care Worker Protection in the Emergency Department During Pandemic Influenza´.

To maintain a clinical focus, current practice and potential practice gaps across the different contexts where emergency care is delivered is explored in the priority areas as identified through the survey, for example the management of hypoglycemia in the emergency care setting.

In September 2009, Sara Twaddle Chair of the GIN Board, was invited by the G-I-N EC Community to present at the   5th Mediterranean Emergency Medicine Conference Guideline Workshop.  The workshop was organised by Dr Wyatt Decker and Dr Eddy Lang both members of the G-I-N EC Community Steering Group to promote the G-I-N EC collaboration. Sue Huckson, coordinator of the G-I-N EC Community also shared the Australian experience of  implementation guidelines through the work of the NHMRC’s Emergency Care Community of Practice.
